Crowns And Bridges:

A porcelain crown is a full "cap" or covering of a tooth where there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to support a standard filling.   A full crown is usually indicated when a tooth has had root canal treatment.
A crown involves reshaping a tooth so that a porcelain covering can be placed over it to protect a weak tooth.   The crown is cemented or bonded to the tooth.
Crowns can also be used to:
Reshape crooked or poorly shaped teeth
   Close diastemas (spaces between teeth)
   Repair broken or chipped teeth
   Strengthen teeth with large fillings

A bridge is a custom device anchored to neighbouring teeth that replaces one or more missing teeth.  When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side of the missing one must be prepared as crowns to serve as abutments to hold the replacement teeth in place.
